Lift Up Your Eyes

Last week, we were reminded that God’s mission is lived out in ordinary places—where we live, work, and play—and that we are called to reflect His love, justice, and mercy without slipping into the world’s harmful patterns, whether through action or silence.

As we reflect this week, let’s return to what Jesus said in John 4: “Lift up your eyes.”

In this passage, the disciples saw inconvenience. Jesus saw harvest.

What they would have avoided became the doorway to a transformed city. This reminds us that opportunity often arrives disguised as interruption.

This past weekend, millions of people worldwide experienced an interruption called the Super Bowl halftime show, where for some, it was a moment of celebration and inclusion. For others, it brought confusion and a sense of exclusion. And for many, it was a moment somewhere between these two emotional experiences. Yet, the common truth for us all is that moment raised deeper questions, individually and collectively: Who gets to be seen? Who gets to belong?

And, no matter how we interpret it, that moment reflects something real in our culture: people are longing to be seen, heard, and understood. Authenticity, identity, and visibility may especially feel deeply felt right now, but they have always mattered—since the beginning of time.

Culture often says: “See yourself first.”

Jesus says: “Lift your eyes—and see what God is doing around you.”

He calls us to recognize the opportunity right in front of us. Yet too often, we label people before listening to them, decide who is worth our time before knowing their story, and overlook the need that Jesus clearly sees.

But Jesus shows us that what others see as inconvenience can become a doorway for God’s mission only if we recognize the opportunities God has placed before us, sense and act upon His urgency, and fully embrace our need for one another.  Only then can we see clearly, act faithfully, and love boldly—without delay in a world that too often settles for silence and division.

God calls us into His kingdom—not just to believe, but to see, to step out, and to join Him in the work He is already doing around us.

Join us for our weekly prayer call as we come before the Father, asking Him to lift our eyes and align our hearts with what He is already doing among us. Together, we’ll pray to be:

  • Sent with opened eyes, recognizing the opportunities for God’s mission that are right in front of us, rather than overlooking them as interruptions.
  • Sent with compassion and humility, choosing to listen before labeling and to see people as Jesus sees them.
  • Sent with holy urgency, responding faithfully to the harvest that is ready now, instead of delaying obedience.
  • Sent with one another, embracing our need for community and partnership in God’s mission, rather than trying to do it alone.
  • Sent into God’s kingdom work, living out His love, justice, and mercy where we live, work, and play.

As we step into God’s mission together, let’s ask ourselves:

What do we see when we lift our eyes?  More importantly, who do we see, and equally, who don’t we see?

As we lift our eyes to Jesus, let’s remember the harvest belongs to Him, and He graciously invites us to join Him in the work He is already doing.

And with trust, we move forward—seeing the opportunity before us, embracing the urgency of the moment, and walking together, guided by His Spirit, and strengthened by His presence to love every nation, tongue, and tribe as He intended His Kingdom to come and be. (Revelation 7:9)

See you at 7 pm!
