Holding Onto What Matters.

Not long ago, I looked at my calendar and thought, “Finally… things are coming together.”

Ministry felt fruitful. Doors were opening. Conversations were going well. I felt steady, and dare I say, in control and maybe even a little proud.

Then, in the span of a few days, a couple of conversations didn’t go how I expected. Opportunities I was counting on fell through. What I thought I had in my hands slipped away.

And it hit me… I wasn’t as dependent on God as I thought. I expected things to work as I saw them.

Ever been there?

See, it’s often in those quiet interruptions that something deeper comes to light. Not just our plans, but our hearts.

In Matthew 19, Jesus is on the road to the cross, forming His disciples in real time, when a man—a rich young ruler—walks away from Him because he can’t let go of what has his heart—riches and wealth rather than Jesus himself.

And instead of moving on in search of what’s next along the journey, Jesus turns to His disciples and pulls them into the moment. He lets them wrestle with it. He shows them what His kingdom is really like, not what they expected.

If we’re honest, we’re not that different. We still ask the same questions, just in different ways:

What do I need to do to make my life work?
What can I hold onto that makes me feel secure?

And Jesus brings us back to what we often miss:

What we could never do for ourselves, God has graciously already done for us. But to receive this kind of grace means letting go of what we’ve been holding onto.

That’s the tension for all of us.

Will we trust Him enough to follow, or keep trying to build life on what we can control?

Because it’s one thing to believe in Jesus. It’s another to follow Him. That’s not just to understand Him, but to become like Him.

To live as disciples who make disciples where we live, work, and play.

So, tonight, we’re making space to come back to Him and His journey for us:

  • To bring the things we’ve been holding onto.
  • To turn from what’s taken His place in our hearts.
  • To realign our lives with His way.
  • To ask for the grace not just to believe, but to follow.
  • To see all creation—people, places, and things—the way Jesus does, and have the courage to point all creation to believe and follow Him.

So maybe that interruption in your life right now isn’t as random as you’d like to think. Maybe it’s an invitation into intention.

Not just for our plans to randomly change, but for our hearts to be intentionally reshaped to hold onto what matters most as Jesus sees and knows it.

To loosen our grip on what we’ve been holding and learn to trust the One who holds all creation, Jesus, again.

Tonight, let’s pray and step into the journey with Jesus… together. See you at 7 pm!

Blessings,
