When you think about your life, what background is behind you? What informs who you are today? Or what you do and/or how you do it?
What takes precedent?
This week, we finished our sermon series, The Cross. In this series, we examined key people and groups in the Bible who encountered the cross of Jesus Christ.
How did an encounter with the cross change their lives? What might it mean for lost humanity?
Well, each of their experiences showed us different transformations—from curious to convert, followers to traitors, bystander to cross-bearer, skeptic to believer, and passivity to mission. We ended with the story of Mary Magdalene, who transformed from sinner to evangelist.
Her story illustrates the complete work of salvation: Jesus redeems, restores, and commissions us for His mission. The mission?
Go and tell the Good News of Jesus, not just His life and death but His resurrection, too.
But what sometimes gets in the way of us fulfilling that mission?
Our past—the pain and shame of our backgrounds that we just can’t seem to shake. What we see informs how we act. Mary had one, too.
However, in the end, she was the first to witness, proclaim, and proclaim the fullness of the Gospel. Her identity moved from simply following Jesus to being a disciple commissioned to tell others about Jesus and His resurrection life. The backdrop of pain and shame no longer defined her.
The transforming power of the cross should truly compel us to go and tell. A true encounter with the cross is necessary so that others can experience our resurrection life.
Will you allow God to help you shake off the pain of the past?
Will you say yes to His healing today?
Will you go and tell of His goodness and life?
As you “go” this week, join us for our prayer call today from 12 pm to 12:30 pm via Zoom as we pray for God to heal our pasts and propel us forward in His mission.
Here’s what we’ll be focusing on:
- Our Pain: That we would yield to God’s healing power. That He would heal us from our pain, shame and loss.
- Our Past: That we truly believe Jesus’s ability to redeem, restore and commission us for His mission. That the weight of our pasts would no longer hold us back.
- His Mission: That we would be ignited and fueled by the cross of Jesus Christ that compels us to go and tell. That we would share the Gospel with others where we live, work and play.
Let’s pray and seek God together.
See you at 12 pm!
God Bless,
Bria Lacour
