Do I belong anywhere?
That’s why 1 Peter 4:7-11 feels so timely right about now.
At a moment in the year when the world tells us to focus inward, Peter reminds us of something better.
Because of Jesus, belonging isn’t something we earn or prove. It’s something we receive. And once we receive it, it becomes something we give.
Just like a few weeks ago at Binghamton University, hundreds of students spent a Saturday serving their city. In serving, they didn’t just help others—they connected with them. That simple shift created a sense of belonging on both sides.
Imagine if the church lived that way every day, especially during the holidays.
Because while the world sings “All I Want for Christmas,” Jesus invites us into a better question:
Who will receive belonging because of you?
What if celebrating Jesus looked less like the world and more like:
- Serving the way He served
- Making room the way He made room
- Loving with agapē — the love that gives, serves, and sacrifices
So as we step into this season and every season, this is what we’re praying toward:
🙏 To become a people who love with agapē, especially when life gets heavy and burdensome.
🙏 Be a people who serve, not from our own strength, but from the strength God supplies.
🙏 Be a people who become like Jesus in the way we kneel, welcome, and care.
🙏 Be a people who make space for others without hesitation or grumbling.
🙏 Be a people whose love and serving helps non-believers experience belonging before belief.
🙏 Be a people who notice and move toward those who feel unseen or overlooked.
🙏 Be a people whose kindness brings healing to hearts that have been guarded or wounded.
🙏 Be a people who create connection for those experiencing loneliness and isolation.
🙏 Be a people whose service awakens curiosity about the Jesus who served us first.
🙏 Be a people who live the Gospel out loud so non-believers encounter Jesus before they understand Him.
🙏 Be a people who trust the Spirit to draw non-believers to Christ through our love, not our arguments.
🙏 Be a people who celebrate when others step into belonging, not because of us, but because of Him.
Remember, a world searching for belonging is waiting for the people who already have it.
Jesus made room for us, so we make room for others.
He served us, so we serve others.
He welcomed us, so we welcome others.
Let it be said of us not that we celebrated well, but that we loved well.
Not that we received much, but that we gave much.
Not that people were impressed with us, but that they encountered Him.
This season, may our lives say one thing loud enough for someone to hear and know:
You belong.
We look forward to seeing you at 7 pm.
God Bless,
Pastor Alvin & Mallary Brown
