Messy-Middle Moments

If only I could go back to a moment before it completely became messy and hurtful…

Does this sound familiar? We likely all know what it feels like to sit hopelessly in the tension of a wounded relationship of someone we deeply care for.

Whether in the past, maybe a present moment, what most of us struggle with isn’t recognizing the gap in our hurt, misunderstanding, or silence—it’s knowing how to move forward without pretending nothing happened.

Enter Paul and his writing of the book of Philemon.

In a short but powerful letter, Paul steps into the messy middle, between offense and restoration, of two people God has deeply grown his heart to love, Philemon and Onesimus.

From that uncomfortable space, he reminds us that second chances don’t happen by accident. Someone has to step into the gap.

Not in force, by shame, or through manipulation, but through the humble appeal of the identity of who and whose we are. Paul understands something we often forget: identity shapes response.

When we know who we are in Jesus, love becomes the natural outflow.

And real faith in Jesus produces real love for people. A love that moves us to see ourselves in this story to stand in the middle like Paul, absorbing discomfort so healing can begin.

But even Paul in the middle points to a center far beyond himself—Jesus is the true and better Mediator.

Jesus stepped into the ultimate gap of our messy middle of sin that severed the relationship between us and the Father. Because of Him being and doing what we could not, all that is fractured in our lives does not have to remain that way.

Jesus gifting us with grace opens a path to forgiveness that leads to reconciliation, being in the right relationship with God and others, that leads to restoration.

What messy-middle moment in life is in need of divine restoration—your marriage, a family member or friendship, your church, or some other deeply cutting and dividing hurt?

Join us tonight not just for a second chance to make wrong things right, but for hearts made whole and alive again—experiencing God’s restoring presence in the real-life mess of where we live, work, and play, and being made beautifully whole.

As we reflect on the call to step into the messy middle, let us pray for:

  • Courage to Enter the Messy Middle
    • That God would give us humility and boldness to invite Him in as we step into fractured relationships rather than avoid them.
  • A Heart Anchored in Our Identity in Christ
    •  That we would remember who we all are in Christ—fully forgiven and deeply loved—and let that identity shape our response to God, ourselves, and others.
  • Grace to Forgive
    •  That the Holy Spirit would reveal any bitterness in us and empower us to release it, trusting that forgiveness opens the door to restoration.
  • True and Lasting Reconciliation
    •  That God would bring not just surface peace, but honest, transformative healing marked by truth, accountability, and love.
  • Willingness to Bear the Cost of Love
    •  That we would surrender our pride, comfort and self-centeredness, reflecting Jesus in the way we pursue peace.
  • Gratitude for Jesus, Our Greater Mediator
    •  That we would thank Him for stepping into the gap for us—and ask Him to help us become bridge-builders in our own relationships.

As Paul expressed, mediating in the messy middle is not about winning arguments simply to win. It’s about mediating in the same way and heart of Jesus, reflecting the truth in His cross that second chances, and more, like Paul experienced, are really possible in our own lives.

What’s broken in your life that you long for to be made beautifully whole again?

See you 7pm, and let’s pray about it together and watch God move in only a way that He can bring beauty from the hurtful, messy ashes of our lives.

Blessings,
